Readings and References

Bateson, Gregory. 1980. Mind and Nature, A Necessary Unity. Bantam Books, New York.

Capra, Fritjof. 1996. The Web of Life. Harper Collins Publishers. 77-85 Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, London W6 8JB. See also his Tao of Physics (1991) Shambhala, Boston and The Turning Point (1982) Simon & Schuster.

Ching, I. 1978. The I Ching, or Book of Changes. Cary F. Barnes English version of the Richard Wilhelm translation from Chinese. Routledge & Kegan Paul Ltd. London.

Elgin, Duane. 1993. Awakening Earth. Exploring the Evolution of Human Culture and Consciousness. William Morrow and Co. N.Y. He has some good ideas, and some wrong ones. Good background and historical information but rather dry and serious.

Fuller, Buckminster. 1975. Synergetics. Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking. Macmillan Publishing Co. N.Y. All about synergy, but heavy reading by design.

Gerard, R.W., C. Kluckhohn, A. Rapoport 1956 Biological and Cultural Evolution, Some Analogies and Explorations. Behavioral Science (1)1:6-34.

Gleick, James. Chaos. 1987. Penguin Press. All about fractals, and how they were discovered. Good stuff, but early on in the fractal game.

Govinda, Lama Anagarika. 1982. Foundations of Tibetan Mysticism. Samuel Weiser, Inc. P.O. Box 612. York Beach, Maine. U.S.A. 03910. One of the very best treatments of ancient wisdom as encapsulated in Om Mani Padma Hum.

Julian Jaynes, 1976. The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. Houghton Mifflin 467pp

Lovelock, James. 1979. Gaia. A New Look at Life on Earth. Oxford University Press. If you can get a copy of this, his first book, grab it. The wrath of the scientific community made his later works a bit more timid and argumentative. This is inspiration. Also see 1991. The Practical Science of Planetary Medicine. GAIA. Allen & Unwin. Australia. Gaia Books. U.K. Nice illustrations, more available than his earlier work.

Margulis, Lynn and Dorion Sagan 1995. What is Life. Simon & Schuster. N.Y. Also 1986. Microcosmos, Summit, New York. These are great books, great writers, great ideas. Five star hotel for your mind.

Maturana, Humberto and Francisco Varela. 1980. Autopoiesis and Cognition, D. Reidel, Dordrecht, Holland.

Murchie, Guy. 1967. Music of the Spheres. The material universe - from atom to quasar, simply explained. Dover Publications, New York. also 1978. The Seven Mysteries of Life. Houghton Mifflin Co. Boston. These are miraculous, wonderful, special books - if you can find them.

Nilsson, Lennart. 1973. Behold Man. A Photographic Journey of Discovery inside the Body. Little, Brown and Company. Boston. Nilsson is one of the great biolgical photographers of the microscopic world. This is the best display of cells I've seen.

Prigogine, Ilya, and Isabelle Stengers. 1984. Order out of Chaos. Bantam, New York.

Redfield, James. 1993. The Celestine Prophecy. Bantam Books. New York. Enjoyable fiction. You'll like it.

Sheldrake, Rupert. 1991. The Rebirth of Nature. Bantam Books, New York. Great stuff. You'll love his morphogenetic fields. One scientific reviewer suggested we burn the book, so you know it is good. If you understand the thread of awareness, you'll catch on to what creates morphogenetic fields.

Teilhard de Chardin, P. 1965. The Phenomenon of Man. Collins. London. The right ideas, heavy reading.

Thomas, Lewis. 1974. The Lives of a Cell. The Viking Press. New York. Also, 1979. The Medusa and the Snail. You will never tire of reading Lewis Thomas. If you have not read these books, treat yourself right away.

Thom, R. 1975. Structural Stability and Morphogenesis. Benjamin, Reading, Mass. U.S.A. Complex but interesting analysis of catastrophie theory.

Watson, Lyall. Lifetide. Bantam Books. New York.
